Lapa is a district in the western region of Sao Paulo. Originally an industrial area, many parts of Lapa have since become gentrified and are now among the more desirable locations to live in the city. The area surrounding Alta da Lapa and Bela Alianca are attractive and sought-after primarily residential areas known for their steep inclines, elegant old buildings and frequently stunning views over the city. The humbler Lapa and Lapa de Baixo are busier, have better access to shops and services and are both geographically and socially more down-to-earth, retaining some of the area’s original industrial atmosphere. It is known for the arcade-style covered market Mercado de Lapa and for Shopping Bourbon. The local SESC Pompeia is an important cultural centre.
Lapa is well-connected both by the road and rail network, with train lines 7 and 8 stopping at Estacão Lapa and bus connections not only into the city centre but to other parts of the metropolitan area. It is well-connected via Avenida Pompeia.
